The course briefly outlines the history of social impact assessment and what it actually means. Social impact assessment is discussed in the context of other forms of impact assessment, including environmental impact assessment. The latter is known as a method to predict the environmental consequences (positive or negative) of a plan, policy, or project prior to the implementation decision, for example of locating a new factory, or starting a mine. Reasons for conducting SIA in current policy environments are outlined and links to the triple bottom line made.
